Introduction

This edition is reconstructed from the 1st-edition PDF with Marker (ML) — it is not the official ECMA text (which exists only as a PDF) and may contain conversion artefacts. The grammar productions are sourced from the 3rd Edition and pruned. ES1 (1997) is the first edition; ES2 (1998) is its editorial reissue.

This ECMA Standard is based on several originating technologies, the most well known being JavaScript™ (Netscape Communications) and JScript™ (Microsoft Corporation). The development of this Standard started in November 1996.

The ECMA Standard is submitted to ISO/IEC JTC 1 for adoption under the fast-track procedure.

This ECMA Standard has been adopted by the ECMA General Assembly of June 1997.
